2008 Hip Hop Honors Predictions

UPDATE:

The 2008 Honorees have been announced. They are: Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Naughty By Nature, Slick Rick and Too $hort. What do you think?

The 2008 VH1 Hip Hop Honors will take place on October 2nd in New York City. Ever since last year's show, people have been speculating about who should be inducted this year (traditionally, there have been anywhere between four and seven performers inducted each year). It makes it difficult to predict, given there is no stated criteria for induction.

Here are our predictions:

I think Kurtis Blow(for being the first rapper with a major record deal),The Juice Crew,Queen Latifah,2 live crew(for fighting for freedom of speech),Fatboys,Epmd,Dougie Fresh & Slick Rick, and Dr Dre. I also think the Roxanne Roxanne battles should be recognized.I also forgot about the Cold Crush Brothers and Heavy D and the Boys.

2 live crew
Too Short
jazzy jeff fresh prince

Posted by gee on Monday, 07.28.08 @ 17:37pm

Kurtis Blow: 1st 'cool' MC to have a major record deal. Just do it..just do it.. do it.. do it!

Fat Boys: the first overweight MC's who paved the way for other large rappers. RIP Buff aka Human Beat Box.

Beastie Boys: got to give these cats their props; they hung in there thru the beginings of DEF JAM. paved the way for other white rappers, License to ILL is a classic

Queen Latifah: next to MC Lyte, one of the tightest females lyricaly.

TOO Short: 1st West Coast MC to bring that pimpin and mackin in the game back in the late-eighties...Biiiitch!!!

OutCast: it's time for New York to let some country boys up in here. Dre and Big Boi help put the Dirty on the map. Back at the Hip Hop Source awards (1994)Dre said 'the south got something to say', well, they did.

Krush Groove: this Hip Hop movie gave Blair Underwood his start and showed a young LL do his thing despite almost gettin a beat down...lol..remember that scence?

I think it should be Jay-z, Outkast, Doug E fresh and Slick Rick, Nas, Krush Groove, Kurtis Blow and for Female rappers Queen Latifah, Roxanne

For Artists
Gang Starr - Premier is the greatest hip hop producer of all time, stuck with Guru from 1989 till now, 6 albums, Guru does his thing on all the albums, they need to be inducted already!
Slick Rick - can't believe he hasn't been honored yet.
Doug E Fresh - they could do him with slick rick(no homo), since he is the world's greatest entertainer.
Outkast - One of the best rap groups of all time. They probably won't honor them, but they have contributed to hip hop throughout the years, and if Missy Elliot got in last year, than I don't see why they can't get in.
De La Soul - Come on, this one should have been done already.
Kool G Rap - One of the greatest rappers, classics with Dj Polo, he should definetely be on here.
Kool Moe Dee - It's Kool Moe Dee, he definetely needs to be honored.
And for the non hip hop artists,
Sampling - What hip hop was created out of.

I HAVE DIRECTLY INFLUENCED GENERATIONS. I DONT NEED AWARDS AND ACCOLADES BUT AT LEAST TELL THE TRUTH.
SPECIAL ED.

gotta include first Too $hort. his career started 28 years from now which is in 1980. NWA must be included. finally, Rakim deserves to be in the list.

THE PHARCYDE: As far as i'm concerned the dopest Cats to eva make records as a collective bringgin' a whole new style to the westcoast hip hop scene. nuthin' but respect 4 Emmany, Booty Brown, Fatlip & Slim Kid Trey "TRUE HIP HOP LEGENDS"!!! GANG STAR: I mean seriously need i say more? #1 DJ with one of the illest MC to eva grab the mic str8-up! Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal's flow & voice tone is unique, pure & real! One of the main hip hop group kings you must make sure is honored none other than (EPMD) them cats brought all business to the mic and every album title

Posted by dre on Saturday, 10.11.08 @ 22:59pm

Next year they need to induct: The Juice Crew (Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, Biz Markie, Marley Marl, Craig G, etc..) or at least some more members of the crew; EPMD; Nas; Jay-Z; Queen Latifah; Dr. Dre; the movie "Style Wars"; and most importantly, Dj Premier and/or Gangstarr.

Posted by Wise on Sunday, 10.12.08 @ 10:03am

there must be a criteria now. it is very disrespectful hip hop it self not to have one and just wing it. it's not done in this way with with anything that has a hall or fame. you may call it honors. but its the hall of fame. you'll started out being disrespectful so it must stop now. let me give you some examples: Rakim without Eric B, Eazy E. without N.W.A. or before them and Dr. Dre. missy before Queen. Cypress Hill period. No EPMD but De La Soul. Need i say more. well let me just side note. there is a difference between Hip Hop and Rap. but when it comes to the Honors/Hall of Fame. they must be linked together. i disagree that everyone from 1980-1995 should get in. i understand they are the prime years but all because you played the game and got on the field don't make you a hall of famer. we should take a page from Rock and Rolls criteria and modify it to hip hop. mainly there 25yr waiting list. does one hot song get you in. if soo. Rob Base it takes 2 was bigger and ran longer on the air waves longer than naughty by natures OPP. thats why i think they should not be in. well just not yet. but i would like to say. thanks for the show. its been 5yrs. its time or improvement. At the rate you're going. everyone that made a record would be in the hall of fame.

in my opinion I love Hip Hop of all time I think that EPMD, Cold crush Brothers, Fab 5 Freddy,, Kurtis BLow , Gang Starr, Outkast and UTFO should be in the hip hop honors next year because they should and worked hard making it the game they influenced me to listen to their songs

Posted by byron on Sunday, 10.12.08 @ 17:45pm

next year's should include EPMD, N.W.A., Kool G. Rap, Gang Starr, and the most underrated emcee in my opinion, P-Dawg.. Paris!!! Guerilla Funk all the way. Can VH1 handle a hard truth soldier???!!!

Posted by Billy Hud on Monday, 10.13.08 @ 00:13am

I got major beef with the way this list looks'. For the simple fact. The Beastie Boys, Nas, and KRS-ONE not being in the top 10 is insane. The fact that NWA is not ahead of Wu-Tang is absurd. I love the Wu. But if wasn't for NWA, Public Enemy, Run Dmc, and The Beastie Boys'. No Wu. Dre cannot hold his own weight on an album without a prodigy like Snoop or Eminem. That is the reason why his two Chronic albums' even sold half as much as they did. Whoever compiled this list does not know a boombox from a beatbox.

Posted by jaydafunkyone on Tuesday, 10.21.08 @ 11:37am

Next year should be Big Pun, Nas, Marley Marl & The Juice Crew (or Kool G Rap by himself), EPMD and Scarface. The year after that shoULd be Jay-Z, DMX, Bone Thugs-N-Hamony, Busta Rhymes and Outkast.

For me anyone inducted into any kind of Hall of Fame needs to be pioneers in their field. For this reason next years inductees, in my opinion, should include:

1. EPMD
2. NWA
3. Outkast
4. Jay-Z
5. Eminem
6. Kurtis Blow
7. Ultramagnetic MC's

This list is crap. How can you put lil kim on there about Big Daddy Kane? How can Ja Rule be on there.
Lil Kim and Ja Rule are terrible.Ja Rule is 3rd rate pop-rap not to mention he sounds identical to the cookie monster(which I believe 50 Cent pointed out,who I also hate)
How is Rakim so far down on this list he is the greatest of all time. And Run-DMC is not the greatest rap group of all time. Some good pop-rap albums but nothing very lyrical about them.
Nelly on here but masta ace isnt?Salt 'n' pepper were middle of the road pop-rap yet there on there and ranked fairly high?
The person who put this up also stated that Common is a new artist?lol common has been around for many years stupid.
Snoop Dogg,DMX,Salt and Pepper,Missy Elloit,P diddy and the overrated beastie boys being ahead of Ice Cube amoung others makes me sick.
And how does kool g rap not find his way onto this list yet Master P and MC Hammer do?

DR.DRE for sure the next year, also Snoop Dogg. Warren G and also the DOC. Just to put it out there, i think that Dr. Dre should had gone earlier

come on Eve...I would have taken lil kim before EVE...come on Tone Loc he was passing Fad MC Hammer thats alright where is Jigga,J-Hova the GREATEST OF ALL TIME....J is embodiment of everything hip hop is and going to be.....to not have him on this list is just hatin' name Tone loc man you did better off puttin DMX on here....and nelly was saved by record sales and the fact he was the biggest artist to ever come out of the mid-west.

Posted by Kryst Allah on Wednesday, 09.23.09 @ 13:28pm

2pac's the best ever.

Posted by J@MES on Wednesday, 10.14.09 @ 19:13pm

I am amazed at some of the selections... Master P at 36, Eve at 46, Tone Loc? There is not even a hint of AZ (Doe or Die, Pieces of a Man). Where is Kool G Rap? Masta Ace? BIG L!!! how could that be missed. There is no appreciation of history in these selections. I'm 47 and been loving hip hop since my days at the Fever in the Bronx. It's a shame that these kids cannot appreciate a group like Boot Camp Clik or Camp Lo and understand that artists like the ones I mentioned above are relevant till this day, because they are part of the evolution and history of hip hop.

Posted by hec on Tuesday, 10.27.09 @ 15:53pm

If this is in order i.e number 1 the best and so on, this is the worst list I have ever seen. Rakim at 20, probably the greatest to ever touch the microphone. Krs One 22, another one of the best ever. Another thing, Common has been around since 91-92, in 94 he made one of the best hip hop songs ever " I used to love her". He should definitely be included. One last thing although there are many mor complaints I could make, how can you put Missy Elliot at 15? Talking strictly female emcees, a) She can't come above Queen Latifah and b) She definitely cannot be above the best female mc of all time MC Lyte. Actually she should not be in the list at all

Posted by lloyd on Thursday, 10.29.09 @ 15:47pm

This list is extremely bunk... Eminem should not on any planet be above Grand Master Flash, no offense to eminem, he just is not better than the grand master.

Posted by Adrian on Tuesday, 11.10.09 @ 15:50pm

Don't let this happen! Please!!! Don't allow the main stream media control your perception of this fantastic art. What about I.C.P. Del tha funkee homosapien, hieroglyphics, atmophere, Jurassic 5, Aesop Rock, Swollen Members, Blackalicious, etc? Do your research, there are many branches to the hip hop tree, we should NEVER deny any branch from being recognised. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! Thank you for hearing me

Who ever put eminem on this list doesnt know anything about hip-hop, and no Big L? This list would had crediablity if Jay-Z And Eminem were off. 1. Because Jay-Z is a bitter not a writer, and Eminem has made one good album, besides that nothing good, no consistencies, and no depth in the lyrics, its all about killing and raping his EX. and hold up Nelly and Will Smith?!?!?!??! OVER GANGSTARR and Big Daddy Kane? MC Hammer? This list is Bullshit
