I hate to admit it but he pulled out the stage performance element of hip hop (dancers, singers, musicians, hype men, etc.) and perfected it. I don't know if I'd call him a rapper though - I guess he knew he didn't really have skills so he did what he best...

Like many artists today who claim to be singers.
